Overview

Headlight Restoration
explained properly.

Written by the team that carries out the work, no filler, no generic marketing copy.

What it is
Progressive wet-sanding of the polycarbonate lens to remove the failed UV coating and oxidised surface, followed by machine polishing to optical clarity, then a durable seal to slow the return of hazing.
Who it's for
Anyone with cloudy, yellowed or dull headlights; a very common issue on cars 5+ years old, and the cheapest single improvement to night-time visibility.
When you need it
As soon as the lenses look yellow or milky. This is a safety issue, not just cosmetic, hazed lenses cut light output significantly.
Why professional matters
Aftermarket 'headlight restoration kits' rarely include a lasting sealant; the lens looks great for weeks, then hazes again within months because bare polycarbonate oxidises under UV. Proper restoration removes the failed layer, restores clarity, and then seals it so the result lasts.

Why it matters

What happens
if you leave it.

Hazed headlights are not a cosmetic problem; they are a safety problem. Light output drops, night-time visibility worsens, and MOT advisories start to appear.

Risks & escalation

  • Reduced light output meaningfully worsens night-time reaction distance to hazards.
  • Advisories or failures on MOT for excessive lens deterioration are increasingly common.
  • Fully failed lenses can require full unit replacement, headlights on modern cars can run into hundreds or thousands of pounds each.
  • Uncorrected UV damage progresses; every additional year without sealing accelerates deterioration.

Common mistakes

  • DIY toothpaste 'hack' videos, mildly polishes the surface, does nothing about oxidised sub-layer, no sealant.
  • Cheap wipe-on kits that produce a good short-term look and haze again within weeks.
  • Polishing without wet sanding; you can only take a hazed lens so far without abrading first.
  • Skipping the UV sealant, guaranteeing the lens returns to yellow within months.

Our process

Meticulous. Methodical.
Repeatable.

  1. 01

    Assessment & Masking

Lens condition assessed, surrounding paint and trim carefully masked to protect from sanding residue and abrasives.

  2. 02

    Progressive Wet Sanding

Multiple grit stages of wet sanding remove the failed UV coating and oxidised surface layer, working from coarser to finer.

  3. 03

    Machine Polishing

Fine polish stages restore optical clarity; the lens is worked until it's genuinely clear, not just 'less yellow'.

  4. 04

    Cleanse & Prep for Sealing

Panel wiped down with a solvent to remove polishing oils so the sealant bonds directly to the freshly-restored polycarbonate.

  5. 05

    Durable UV Sealant Applied

A dedicated headlight-grade sealant is applied and cured; the step aftermarket kits usually skip.

  6. 06

    Final Inspection & Handover

Studio-lit inspection, masking removed, brief on how long you can expect the result to hold and how to maintain it.

Benefits

What you actually get
for the money.

Night-time visibility restored

Light output improves once the failed lens layer is removed; a genuine safety upgrade, not just an aesthetic one.

Cheaper than replacement

Restoration is a fraction of the cost of full headlight unit replacement on most modern cars.

Sealed, not just polished

The UV sealant is what makes restoration last; this step is included, not skipped.

Consistent optical clarity

Machine polishing under studio lighting is repeatable, both headlights end up matched, not one better than the other.

MOT-ready presentation

Restored lenses avoid the increasingly common lens-deterioration advisory.

Standalone or bolt-on

Deep detail

Under the surface
of the work.

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, light, tough and cheap to manufacture, but sensitive to UV once the factory coating fails. Restoration is a materials-driven process.

Why lenses yellow

Factory lenses come with a hard UV-resistant coating. Over years of sun exposure that coating fails, exposing bare polycarbonate which oxidises rapidly, that's the yellowing you see.

Why sanding matters

You cannot polish oxidation out of the sub-surface; you have to abrade it away. Progressive wet sanding removes the failed layer, then finer grits refine the surface enough for polishing to bring back optical clarity.

Why sealing matters

Freshly polished polycarbonate has no UV protection. Without a sealant it will re-oxidise within weeks to months. A dedicated headlight-grade UV sealant is the step that turns a short-term fix into a lasting result.

Suitability

Works on the vast majority of modern polycarbonate lenses (cars, vans, some classics). Very deeply damaged lenses or those with internal condensation or reflector failure may need replacement instead, we'll be honest at inspection.

Combining with a full detail

Restoration slots into a full-detail booking with no extra logistics. When you're already having the car in the studio, adding headlights is a small step with a big visual and safety payoff.

Frequently asked

Answers before
you have to ask.

How much does headlight restoration cost?

+

Quoted per vehicle; most cars are a straightforward, cost-effective job compared with replacement. Get in touch for a personalised quote.

How long does it take?

+

Standalone restoration typically fits into a half-day. When bundled with a full detail, it's included in the standard 48-hour turnaround.

How long will the results last?

+

The key is the UV sealant; a proper sealed restoration lasts far longer than a wipe-on kit. Precise longevity depends on how much sun and weather the car sees, and where it's parked.

Is it worth restoring, or should I just replace the headlights?

+

In most cases restoration is far cheaper and gives an excellent result. If a lens is internally damaged (condensation inside, cracked reflector) replacement is the right call, we'll advise honestly.

Does it help my night-time visibility?

+

Yes, hazed lenses meaningfully reduce light output. Restoring the lens returns light throw much closer to where it should be.

Is it MOT-relevant?

+

Excessive lens deterioration can attract MOT advisories or failures. Restoration addresses that directly.

Do you do this on vans and classics?

+

Yes; most polycarbonate lenses are suitable regardless of vehicle type or age.

Do you cover Southend, Rayleigh, Basildon, Chelmsford?

+

Yes, studio in Hawkwell, Hockley; customers from across Essex regularly bring cars in. Pickup and drop-off is available on request.
